Since 1966

Pakistan Welfare Association (Hounslow) was established by some of the first Pakistani residents of the borough, in 1966. Since its foundation the Association has entirely been managed by volunteers from all walks of life who have given up their own time to help the community. PWA has worked tirelessly to ensure that the Pakistani community of Hounslow is well catered for and represented. In our early years we worked with the council to secure a reserved section of Hatton Cross Cemetery for Muslim burials. Since then we have been granted special permission to perform same or next day burials, including weekends, so that our brothers and sisters can comply with the sharia requirements of janazah. In 1972 PWA formed the Houslow Jamia Mosque, it was initially located in a garage on Bath road, where Friday prayers were held, before moving to the location of the old Mosque at 233 Bath Road a few years later. The Association then played a crucial part in campaigning for a more appropriate site to build a larger purpose built Mosque and as a result the site of the current Mosque was agreed with the council. Control of Hounslow Jamia Mosque was vested in an independent group of trustees. Thanks to the efforts of PWA, Hounslow is proudly twinned with the Pakistani city of Lahore. In 2004 a five year process was finally completed when the Mayor of the London Borough of Hounslow visited Lahore in order to sign a twinning charter

with the Chief Executive of the Lahore Cantonment Board. Delegates from Lahore Cantt had signed the first part of the twinning charter on their visit to Hounslow back in 1999. Recently the Association awarded a number of its former executive an appreciation award for the countless years of service. Those individuals helped shape PWA into what it is today. But we should not forget all those that go unmentioned and were pivotal in the history of the Association, whilst they may not be listed they are certainly remembered and we salute them. Listed to the left is a table of all our previous Presidents and General Secretaries, as far back as our founding year. We hope that there will be new members that feel as passionate about the Association and get involved in the near future.
